Technical information about this website’s accessibility

This accessibility statement applies to Transport for the North’s website, www.transportforthenorth.com.

This website is run by Transport for the North. We are committed to making this website accessible and usable for all people, including those who rely on assistive technologies.

For example, that means you should be able to:

  • change colours, contrast levels and fonts using browser or device settings
  • zoom in up to 400% without the text spilling off the screen
  • navigate most of the website using a keyboard or speech recognition software
  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)

We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.

AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

How accessible this website is

We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible:

  • Some older PDF and document formats may not yet be fully accessible to screen readers.
  • Some third-party or embedded content may not consistently meet the same accessibility standards as the rest of the website.
  • In some cases, interface behaviour may vary across browsers, devices or assistive technology combinations.

Enforcement procedure

The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) is responsible for enforcing the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018 (the ‘accessibility regulations’). If you’re not happy with how we respond to your complaint, contact the Equality Advisory and Support Service (EASS).

Technical information about this website’s accessibility

Transport for the North is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

Compliance status

The website has been tested against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA standard.

The website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below.

Non-accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reason(s):

(a) non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

Documents

Some older PDF and document files are not fully accessible. Issues may include missing document structure, missing headings, insufficient tagging, and content that is not fully readable by screen readers.

Third-party and embedded content

Some third-party tools or embedded content may not consistently meet WCAG 2.2 AA requirements (for example, keyboard access, focus behaviour, or assistive technology support).

Cross-device and assistive technology variation

Some interface behaviours may vary across browser, device, and assistive technology combinations, which can affect consistent operation for some users.

Media accessibility quality

Where video is hosted on third-party platforms, captions may be auto-generated and may not always be fully accurate.

Content that’s not within the scope of the accessibility regulations

PDFs and other documents

The accessibility regulations do not require us to fix PDFs or other documents published before 23 September 2018 if they’re not essential to providing our services. For example, we do not plan to fix PDFs published on our previous website.

If you need an older document in an accessible format, please contact us and we will endeavour to provide an alternative version where the document is required to access our services.

Live video

We do not plan to add captions to live video streams because live video is exempt from meeting the accessibility regulations. Video uploads to our website will be embedded into YouTube, which has in-built closed caption features.

Videos

Video content on this website is currently embedded from third-party platforms (including YouTube and Vimeo) and may also be provided through linked media files.

We aim to publish accessible video content where possible. However, caption availability depends on the source platform and the media provided. Some videos may use auto-generated captions, which may not always be fully accurate.

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

We regularly test key user journeys, including navigation, search, filtering, pagination and core page interactions.

We review accessibility in development and update components when issues are identified.

We monitor behaviour across major browsers and device sizes.
